A Shared Sense of Purpose Starts With Understanding the Customer

Product leaders and their cross-functional partners share a common promise and a shared sense of purpose: to define, discover, and bring to market product experiences that create genuine value for the people we serve. That purpose can easily get lost in roadmaps, priorities, timelines, and delivery, which is why we need to continually connect our teams back to the customer and help them understand not only what we are building, but why it matters.

To do that well, we need to understand the customer’s story beyond their interaction with our product. We need to know what they are trying to accomplish, what motivates them, where they experience moments of struggle, what influences their decisions, and what other tools, people, and processes are part of their journey.

Understanding the Entire Customer Journey

Our customers do not experience our products in isolation. A single task may involve multiple systems, conversations, workarounds, and decisions before they ever interact with us, which means looking only at our portion of the experience can give us an incomplete view of the problem.

Understanding the end-to-end journey helps us see where friction exists, where expectations are not being met, and where there are opportunities to create meaningful value. Rather than simply asking what feature a customer wants, we can begin asking what they are ultimately trying to accomplish, why it matters to them, and what is preventing them from getting there today.

Those moments of struggle are often where the most important opportunities exist. When we understand the problem deeply enough, we can move beyond responding to requests and begin imagining better experiences.

Research Helps Us Understand the Human Being

Our UX research partners are essential to uncovering this story because human behaviour is complex. Our decisions are shaped by past experiences, habits, emotions, environments, expectations, and unconscious reactions, regardless of whether the customer is a new user, a power user, or a senior executive.

Research helps us understand not only what customers say, but what they actually do and why. That insight gives multidisciplinary teams the context they need to make stronger decisions, challenge assumptions, and align around a meaningful customer problem rather than a predefined solution.

Customer Stories Create Shared Purpose

One of our responsibilities as product leaders is to make sure the customer story travels throughout the organization. Our teams should understand who they are building for, what that person is trying to accomplish, where they struggle, and how our work can improve their experience.

When teams understand that story, the work becomes more than delivering features or completing items on a roadmap. Designers, engineers, researchers, marketers, and product leaders can see how their individual contributions connect to an outcome that matters to the customer.

That is where a shared sense of purpose comes from. It is created when we understand the human being on the other side of the product and bring our multidisciplinary teams together around solving a meaningful problem. When we start with the customer story, we create the conditions for stronger collaboration, better decisions, and products that deliver genuine value.
